The writing lab at the Thornton Center is one of the busiest places in the facility! We work with students throughout their academic careers, from that first freshman composition class through graduate courses, and we work with students from any discipline. Students come to us at every stage of the writing process, so a typical day might find us helping someone brainstorm to develop ideas for an English 101 paper, guiding another student as she conducts research for an anthropology project, giving feedback to a student at work on a speech, unpacking a particularly difficult poetry passage, or explaining, one last time, the world of commas. While the individual tutoring sessions might be focused on specific writing projects, our mission is to help students develop critical reading and writing skills that will see them through their careers at UT and beyond.

The lab is staffed by experienced tutors who have taught college level writing and literature courses. The staff is dedicated to the notion that, whatever their writing level when they come to us, students can build their reading and writing skills to develop a strong foundation for all their studies.
