 Tutorial Assistance

Tutorial assistance is central to our educational enhancement efforts at the Thornton Center. Tutoring is available in any subject, and tutors use a variety of techniques to help students achieve their academic goals. Whether working through math homework, committing anthropology terms to memory, or perfecting an accent, students who work with tutors gain valuable academic support. Ideally, working with a tutor provides a student with the opportunity to master the information needed to perform well in class. In fact, working with tutors helps students develop study skills and impresses upon them the benefits of effective time management and diligent attention to academics.

Tutors are provided for one-on-one and/or group study sessions. Generally, the tutors are graduate students in the discipline in which they tutor and many of them already hold a Master's degree. Some of the tutors also serve as Graduate Teaching Assistants in their department, so they are well aware of departmental goals and students' needs.

It has been our experience that when both the student-athlete and tutor enter tutoring sessions prepared to work hard, the student can expect to make great progress. We believe that the Thornton Center tutoring program adds a great deal to the student-athlete's academic experience and success.

For information on becoming a tutor at the Thornton Center, please e-mail Ashley Wheelis, Tutor Coordinator, at awheelis@utk.edu.
