Commitment to Athletic Excellence

This commitment strives to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.

This commitment is directed at our administrators. In order to see it through to fruition, it must have even greater administration support than some of the other commitments, because a life skills coordinator cannot make it happen for them or in spite of them. It represents a philosophical commitment to administer an athletics program that truly dedicates itself to the well-being of the student-athletes.

The Athletic Commitment encompasses four distinct segments:

  1. A commitment to a broad program of sports;
  2. A commitment to a well-qualified and trained staff of coaches and support staff;
  3. Facilities, equipment, scheduling and travel accommodations that allow each athlete to achieve his/her maximum potential; and
  4. Support programs that accommodate the needs of all student-athletes.

It is in the Athletic Commitment that the time and effort of most administrators is concentrated. In most cases, it is not the place of the CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator to tell the athletics director how to administer this commitment. This observation does not mean that this commitment is off limits. It simply means that the entire program must be developed and supported from the top, and the CHAMPS Life Skills coordinator must work to assist and support the athletics director's efforts to develop this commitment to its maximum.
